What’s lurking in your hand wash? Ingredient labels can be a complete mystery unless you have a science degree. So here are a few simple things to look for - and a few to avoid - when choosing a skin-loving natural hand wash.
1. Plant-based ingredients (most of the time)
Look for brands using plant-based ingredients. These are usually gentler on your skin and the planet. Not always (points the finger at palm oil), but it’s a good place to start when choosing a natural hand wash.
2. Gentle, natural surfactants
Look for natural surfactants (they do the cleaning). In a gentle hand wash, these often come from natural sources like coconut, olive or other natural oils. We use coco-glucoside made from coconuts and glucose (from corn).
3. No SLS (aka sulphates)
Look out for and avoid SLS, aka sulphates, aka sodium lauryl sulphate. Many people prefer a sulphate-free hand wash, because they can be harsh on your skin microbiome, stripping it of its natural, protective oils. No thanks.
4. Skip the parabens
Look out for and avoid parabens, which are a preservative with a bad rep. They’re one of the most common ingredients to avoid in hand wash. A good paraben-free hand wash can still stay fresh and effective without relying on them.
5. No synthetic colours
Look for hand wash without synthetic colourings that are often made with petroleum-based products and frankly, your hands don’t care what colour they’re washed with. A natural hand wash doesn’t need fake dyes to do its job.
6. Refillable beats single-use plastic
Look for refillable and reusable packaging, as opposed to single-use plastic. Brands who favour a more natural, sustainable approach often extend those values to their packaging too.
