How do you test a deodorant?
You sniff some armpits. Then you sniff them again.
Well, obviously there’s a little more to it than that. We used a standard method for testing deodorants which uses the untreated armpits of human volunteers which are compared by trained assessors (AKA professional armpit sniffers) who score the strength of body odour.
One person. Two pits.
The protocol starts with a bit of prep: volunteers use unperfumed soap and go without deodorant or antiperspirant for two weeks. A big commitment to science (although possibly a bigger commitment from their loved ones).
The armpit sniffers score each volunteer’s underarm odour and then deodorant is applied to one pit. The other stays untreated as a control to make sure it’s a fair test.
The sniff test
Volunteers come back for assessments at set intervals. The sniffers don’t know which armpit received the deodorant (a blind sniff test if you will) and give each pit an odour score. Researchers then compare the results and check whether the differences are statistically significant.
Not just “smells alright to me, Dave”. Proper testing. Actual data. And a remarkable amount of time spent near other people’s armpits.
